Spent half the day at my allotment. Finally got round to planting my seed potatoes, at least those that I didn't let rot in garage. Also planted some beetroot and chard. The former I have had little success with in the past and the latter was last years star. I had never grown chard before, it grew very well and was very very tasty. Lightly fried with garlic in a bit of chilli oil, it became my favourite!
I was worried that because of the constant wet weather of the last week or so that my old slimy nemesis would be out in full force. Fortunately this proved not to be the case. I didn't spot a single slug. After speaking to one of my nearby neighbours on the allotment site, he agreed the slugs appear to be off to a slow start this year.
The question is though: Is this the calm before the storm? Are they hiding, mustering their numbers, before launching a horrific attack and slaughting all the tender young shoots that will soon be making an appearance?
And I have still not bought any nematodes this year; I should have had my first batch of microscopic soldiers in the ground by now. Will dispatching my troops later mean I will pay a heavy price? Time will tell.
